Apex Legends doesn’t need PvE elements in its Battle Royale


Apex Legends Season 11: Escape is well advanced, bringing with it new changes and gameplay elements. Season 11 adds playable legend Ash, the CAR SMG, and a new map, Storm Point. Storm Point benefits from a tropical environment and brings more PvE elements, which unfortunately doesn’t add much value to the mainly PvP-focused battle royale.

Apex Legends has dabbled in PvE elements in the past, with Bloodhound’s Trials POI on World’s Edge and Season 5 Quest missions, however, Storm Point offers multiple areas on the map with mobs to fight off, the first map to do it. The problem with these PvE encounters is that the rewards aren’t worth the time required and aren’t hard enough to be truly engaging. In its current state, Apex Legends doesn’t need more PvE elements.

Throughout Storm Point, you may encounter groups of prowlers or spider nests, where a group of either enemy can attack you. Prowlers chase after you and attempt to bite you, while spiders only partially close the distance before shooting you with webs. Since none of these enemy groups ever change strategy, the result is repetitive encounters that are little more than a boring shooting range. Spiders die pretty quickly, but stalkers can be bullet sponges, wasting full clips of ammo if you don’t have a magazine. And the rewards you get for fending off them don’t exactly make up for it.

Each dead enemy drops two objects. One is an ammo pack, suitable for all types of weapons your team equipped at the time. The other item will either be shield cells, syringes, or an accessory for one of your weapons or those of your teammates. Weapon attachments can be anything from rarity to epic and while getting a purple attachment can be a nice acquisition, it doesn’t make fighting these encounters worth the time and resources. It takes enough ammo to kill every enemy you are likely to break even with the ammo you collect. And while an argument can be made that prowlers and spiders pose a rewarding risk to those who are in desperate need of medication or certain props, Storm Point is so large that it’s best to spend your time moving on to the next ring. and explore a point of interest. With 15% more playable space than World’s Edge, Storm Point is large enough that you can almost always find an area that hasn’t been touched that has loot in it even after multiple turns.

With the way the Apex Legends game loop works today, the Battle Royale game shouldn’t add more PvE elements. If Respawn intends to add these elements to other maps in future updates, the rewards will have to feel more interesting and the enemies will have to be more engaging to fight. Perhaps future map designs and modifications could be designed with the PvE elements in mind. On World’s Edge, the Bloodhound Trials are kept in one specific location, with loot rewards that are usually well worth it. Ultimately, Apex Legends doesn’t need PvE elements to keep the game fresh. Ignoring the PvE elements on Storm Point, the map offers new environments and much more enjoyable new game elements like gravity cannons. Along with each season bringing a new Legend with different abilities, there are plenty of opportunities to add new elements to the game without straying from the core PvP action.

The only area where PvE makes sense for Apex Legends would be questing, like the Broken Ghosts questline from Season 5. Quest missions took place on modified versions of the map, with hordes of prowlers battling it all out. by performing specific tasks. These missions ultimately weren’t very fun to play, as these rangers also had predictable attack patterns that were easy to counter. But, with a few improvements for enemies, Quest missions could be fun and also an engaging way to provide more knowledge in the context of the game.
