Halo Infinite doesn’t need a Battle Royale mode

Since the announcement of Halo Infinite, it feels like the talk has surrounded whether or not the game’s multiplayer should support some sort of battle royale mode. To be fair, it seems like any game these days that doesn’t come with a battle royale of some sort will only lead to idiots on Twitter with soccer players or anime characters in their profile picture for. proclaim “dead game” as they are the arbiter of player metrics, but I digress.

Regardless, the developers of Halo Infinite 343 Industries have said in the past that there is no plan for a battle royale mode, while leaks for Halo Infinite have both confirmed and debunked the existence of a mode. While we don’t know if Halo Infinite will ever have a battle royale mode, the question remains whether or not it should, and there is enough reason to suggest that a Halo BR mode in Infinite would be great. The increased number of movement options available in Infinite would make crossing the BR map more fun than most games, and the heart of Halo has always been getting weapons off the map and using them to dominate. Making these weapons random appearances is a whole different story, but the point still stands.

However, I feel like Halo Infinite doesn’t really need a battle royale mode, for a number of reasons. First, just adding a battle royale mode just because all the cool kids are doing it doesn’t fit Halo’s MO at all. This is a series that debuted with the brave subtitle of “Combat Evolved,” a self-imposed moniker that the original Halo more than respected.

Aside from the infamous Alien: Resurrection which also took the twin stick approach to first-person shooters, no FPS game at this point offered such strategic or satisfying campaigns or overall gameplay. than Halo. This is a trend that continued until Halo: Reach, before Bungie handed over the reins to 343 Industries. While Halo 4 and 5 were still good, they unfortunately did not consider older versions.

Combat Evolved has been a mantra that Halo has tried to live by throughout its creation, and it’s something that Halo Infinite is trying to bring back. An open-world approach to the campaign might not be the newest thing in the world, but it’s kind of an evolution for the entire franchise, while the battle passes approach is an evolution for the multiplayer game as a whole. What kind of evolution would the addition of a battle royale mode offer? From there, it would be like jumping on a trend far too late.

This is the other point where Halo Infinite should avoid Battles Royales: they seem to be losing their relevance. I’m not going so far as to suggest that Fortnite et al are dead games, as that would be silly, but the true battle royale formula, as it has existed in the game for the past few years, is no longer the hallmark. of the golden star that was once. Fortnite themselves have recognized this, adding features like Creative Mode, Party Royale and new modes like Imposters, shameless cash-in on Among Us, and the new trend in social deduction games.

Seriously, if 343 Industries wanted to add a battle royale mode in some sort of attempt to chase the weight off, they’d be better served by adding some sort of social deduction mode and calling it a day, because it looks like they’re over. relevant than BR Modes at the moment. Adding a battle royale to Halo Infinite seems pointless right now, especially when you could wait a few months for 343 to release Forge mode and the community to still make the mode anyway.

Again, I don’t want this to sound derogatory to the “idea” of a Halo battle royale in general. There is potential there for it to be one of the best games out there, but I just don’t think it should come close to Halo Infinite. I don’t want the game’s population to be split between this mode and the rest of the game, leaving some of the more experimental or weirdest modes like Oddball, Infection, or Grifball to kill because you can only find games playing it. TDM or BR. At least make it a standalone game, have the combat pass progression also intersect if you want, but keep it separate from the main Halo Infinite MP experience.

Regardless of that, if 343 Industries felt that a BR mode would either a) be interesting or b) make the game more money, chances are they would anyway. Not only do I not think Halo Infinite needs a battle royale mode, but personally I just don’t want to see it. Halo, for me, remains the last vestige of multiplayer shooters who haven’t cashed in to get on the battle royale train, and hopefully that’s because the series doesn’t want or need to hunt. tendencies. I don’t want to face the reality that it’s because there hasn’t been a new Halo game in years.
