The Marauders battle pass won’t be “anti-lore” if the Escape From Tarkov-style battle royale game gets that form of monetization. The team acknowledges that Battle Passes “are the only thing that really works these days,” but apparently aren’t following the same path as Fortnite or Halo Infinite.
Marauders is a new Battle Royale space game that was crowdfunded in 2020. It is now set to release in Steam Early Access this year. PCGamesN spoke to developer Small Impact Games and lead designer Cameron Small told us what players can expect in terms of monetization – and how the team doesn’t want a bunch of XP gates that will put players off. .
“Battle Passes are the only thing that really works these days to push competitors forward,” Cameron tells us while acknowledging that this is likely a controversial opinion. “However, I’m not happy with its ‘anti-lore’ connotations because battle passes can fit into a story. We’re not a story-based game but we have this Day-Z [feel]we want people to get lost and create their own.
The designer is also keen to explore battle pass missions for marauders, while making sure that “it’s not an XP gate, where you have to do it and get the most out of the experience. Like, ‘oh, by the way, if you give me the heads of all seven legendary pirates, you’ll progress through this battle pass structure’.
“I really have Fortnite cosmetic leveling too,” Cameron says. “I think cosmetics is something that people have agreed to be monetized on. We have a gamemaster, you’re always looking at your character and looking at other players, so it fits. The designer notes that everything this is still “on hold” at this time, and the team is seeing what works before possibly adding monetization “in the future”.
“Obviously you have to adapt it to the lore,” he adds of the Marauders battle pass, “can’t have llamas running around or whatever.”
Marauders will release in Steam Early Access sometime in 2022.
